- Hiring Bonus
- Police Officer Cadets and Laterals:
A maximum incentive of $5,000 may be offered, payable
as follows: $1,500.00
upon successful completion of the first four weeks of the
APD Academy,
$2,000.00 upon graduation from the APD Academy, and
$1,500.00
upon successful completion of OJT. A
lower incentive amount may be offered, but it will be
prorated according to the above schedule.
- Police (911/242-COPS) Dispatchers:
A maximum incentive of $1,500 may be offered, payable
as follows: $250
at the successful completion of their classroom and OJT,
$750 at the successful completion of 6 months of service
from date of hire, and $500 at the successful completion of
their City probationary period (one year from date of hire).
A lower incentive amount may be offered, but it will
be prorated according to the above schedule.
- Retirement
All City of Albuquerque police officer employees, with the
exception of Rehires, participate
in the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA). Police
officers are eligible to retire after 20 years of service and
regardless of age. Upon retirement, officers will receive 70%
of their pay from the last three years of their employment.
Police officers who wish to retire after 22 years and 10 months,
will receive 80% of their pay from the last three years of their
employment.
- Take Home Car Program
All police officers that successfully complete their twelve-week
On-The-Job-Training (OJT) program, will be issued a patrol vehicle
for their use during working hours. This patrol vehicle can
also be driven to and from work and off duty. To participate
in this program, officers must live within a ten (10) mile
radius of the Bernalillo County boundary. Officers
living outside of this limit may apply to the Chief for
special consideration.
- Uniforms
Uniforms and equipment now provided for all ranks by the
Albuquerque Police Department.
- College Incentive
Police officers who have degrees, will receive the following
additional pay incentive. There are two pay periods per month.
Officers will be paid for only one degree at the highest academic
level obtained.
- Bachelor’s degree $135.00 per month ($1620.00
annually)
- Master’s degree $160.00 per month ($1920.00
annually)
- PHD $185.00 per month ($2,220.00 annually)
Beginning
in July 1, 2008 officers are entitled to full tuition loan
payback after a seven year commitment.
- Shift Differential
Police officers who work the following shifts will receive shift
differential pay. There are two pay periods per month.
- Swing Shift $25.00 per month ($300.00 annually)
- Graveyard $50.00 per month ($600.00 annually)
- Bilingual Pay
Police officers who want to participate in the bilingual pay
program must pass an oral examination, written examination or
both in the particular language.
- Upon passing written and oral proficiency exam $50.00 per
month ($600.00 annually)
- Upon passing oral proficiency exam $20.00 per month
($240.00 annually)
- Specialty Pay
Police officers who are assigned to these Units will receive
the following additional pay incentive.
- Pilots $50.00 per month ($600.00 annually)
- Bomb Squad $50.00 per month ($600.00 annually)
- Aerial Observer $50.00 per month ($600.00 annually)
- Motorcycle Officers $50.00 per month ($600.00 annually)
- S.W.A.T $50.00 per month ($600.00 annually)
- Crisis Negotiation Team officers $50.00 per month ($600.00
annually)
- Crisis Intervention Team officers $50.00 per month
($600.00 annually)
- Horse Mounted Unit $50.00 per month ($600.00 annually)
- Field Training Officers $100.00 per month ($1200.00
annually)
- Holiday Pay
Legal holidays for police officers shall be as follows:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King’s Birthday
- Washington’s Birthday
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Veteran’s Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Day After Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day
Police officers shall receive holiday pay at straight time
at their hourly rate for either 8 or 10 hours based on their
normal work shift for all holidays not worked. In the event
a police officers is required to work on a holiday, and
does not exercise an option to take a floating holiday,
he/she shall be paid holiday pay as mentioned above, plus
time-and-one-half (1 and ½) for the first 8 hours
if on a normal work shift of 10 hours, plus 2 hours straight
compensatory time.
A police officer may float any or all of the holidays mentioned
in the above listed paragraph. A floating holiday is one
that the employee may convert to vacation either eight (8)
or ten (10) hours per holiday depending on their normal
workday anytime after the actual holiday has occurred. A
floating holiday can also be used as an additional vacation
day if used within the same pay period of the holiday.
- Overtime
The normal workday shall be eight (8) or ten (10) hours. The
normal workweek will be forty (40) hours comprised of either
five (5) eight-hour or four (4) ten-hour days. Police officers
will be entitled to overtime compensation at the rate of time-and-one-half
(1 and ½) of their regular straight time pay rate when
they perform work in excess of forty (40) hours in any one workweek.
Officers may voluntarily work up to 20 hours of overtime per
week, adding up to $1,264.20 to their monthly gross income
- Compensatory Time
The normal workday shall be eight (8) or ten (10) hours. The
normal workweek will be forty (40) hours comprised of either
five (5) eight-hour or four (4) ten-hour days. Police officers
will be entitled to be compensated at 1 and ½ times the
officer’s rate of pay or in the form of compensatory time.
Compensatory time will be computed at the rate of 1 and ½
times the hours actually worked.
- Medical, Hospitalization and Dental Insurance
The City of Albuquerque provides a number of group medical,
hospitalization and dental plans that officers can choose from.
The officer shall pay 20% of the premium cost and the City will
pay 80% of the premium cost.
- Vacation Leave Accrual
Vacation leave will accrue for police officers as follows:
- 1 Month to 5 Years 8 hours/month or 12.5 days/year
- 5 Years, 1 Month to 10 Years 10 hours/month or 15 days/year
- 10 Years, 1 Month to 15 Years 12 hours/month or 18 days/year
- 15 Years, 1 Month and over 13 hours/month or 20 days/year
- Sick Leave Accrual
Sick leave will accrue for police officers as follows:
- Per Month 8 hours
Emergency leave can be charged to sick leave for up to three
(3) work days may be requested when the presence of the employee
is required by a physician as a result of a serious illness
or injury to a member of an employee’s immediate family.
The City will allow as many as three (3) workdays emergency
leave for a death in the employee’s immediate family.
If travel over five hundred (500) miles (one way from Albuquerque)
is required for a death of a member of the immediate family
of an employee, one (1) additional leave day per five hundred
(500) mile increment shall be granted. Employees may elect
to use accrued vacation leave instead of sick leave for an
“emergency leave”, however, the officer shall
be subjected to the conditions of using “emergency leave.”
- Parental Leave
The City will grant police officers the leave benefits set forth
in the Family Medical Leave Act (F.M.L.A.) for the purpose of
a medical condition related to childbirth or care of a newborn
child in accordance with federal law and City Rules and Regulations.
Employees taking FMLA leave for the purposes of childbirth or
care of a newborn child may choose to take either sick leave,
vacation or compensatory time.
The Chief of Police may grant up to 720 hours of Leave Without
Pay for the purpose of the medical condition related to childbirth
and care of a newborn child. The leave may be granted in the
following manner: (1) up to 360 hours of Leave Without Pay in
lieu of sick leave for a medical condition related to childbirth;
and (2) up to 360 hours of Leave Without Pay for care of a newborn
child. The officer is limited to one request in a 12-month period.
It is recognized that staffing requirements may be a major factor
in the approval of the request for leave for care of a newborn
child. Upon returning to active duty under this section, the
employee will retain full seniority, step, rank and previously
held position.
Employees are eligible to request additional Leave Without Pay
up to one (1) year under the City’s Rules and Regulations
to be approved by the Chief Administrative Officer upon the
recommendation of the Chief of Police. Such requests may only
be approved if the officer agrees in writing to allow their
seniority/anniversary date to be adjusted for the time they
are on Leave Without Pay beyond the 720 hours allowed by this
section. This change in anniversary date will also be used in
calculating the experience requirement for promotion. The anniversary
date shall be calculated from the day the employee returns to
paid status, less the 720-hour period provided by this section.

- The City of Albuquerque, subject to the availability of
funds, may provide as an incentive to classified
non-probationary employees, unclassified employees with a
minimum of six (6) months of service and classified
part-time employees working twenty (20) hours or more per
workweek, the opportunity to pursue their career interest
in City government through education and training. The
City may provide employees with financial assistance
and/or leave to attend courses and other approved training
programs.
- Lunches while attending Academy paid for by department.
