Tactical Unit
K9
The Canine Unit utilizes K9s to search buildings for intruders and to track wanted subjects. The trained law enforcement canine or Police Service Dog (PSD) is a valuable supplement to police manpower because of their superior physical capabilities. PSD teams respond to situations where the PSD could be used to facilitate the capture of suspects with the least amount of injury to either the officers involved, the public, or the suspect. Canines are also requested for situations where their abilities to search would eliminate unnecessary use of man-hours by expediting a search for suspects or evidence. In addition, K-9 Unit Officers (Handlers) use their PSDs to apprehend certain criminal suspects, protect the PSD’s Handler, track/wind scent individuals, prevent suicidal individuals from harming themselves or others, detect certain narcotics, detect explosive materials, conduct article searches, and perform any other function deemed necessary by the Albuquerque Police Department (APD).
Swat
The SWAT Team provides tactical and general support to the department. This includes, but is not limited to the resolution of hostage barricade situations, high risk warrants, and specialized patrol functions. The primary objective is to combat crimes against property and persons and to resolve violent situations beyond the scope of the regular street patrol officer. These specific objectives are not to be exclusive of the other sworn duties of officers of the department.
Horse Mounted Unit
The Horse Mounted Unit will provides support and assistance to the department. This includes assisting in crowd control, traffic control and searches.
Bombs/EOD
The EOD unit provides a safe means of handling and disposing of explosives, dangerous ammunition and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), and to assist other agencies. The unit also conducts crime scene investigations and processes post-blast scenes including follow-up investigations and case presentation as needed.
