Introduction

This practice exam is designed to help you prepare for the City of Albuquerque Police Department Entry-Level Written Exam. Please note that while the practice exam is available in a computerized format, the APD Entry-Level Written Exam is administered in a paper-and-pencil format.

The online practice exam consists of twenty-three (23) multiple-choice sample questions which will help you become more familiar with the types of questions that are contained on the actual exam. The actual exam will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions. The questions on the online practice exam are sample questions -- they do not represent every type of question you may encounter on the actual exam. Do not attempt to memorize the practice questions and answers. Sample questions on the practice exam will not appear on the actual exam.

You are permitted to take notes during the actual exam and are encouraged to do the same while taking the online practice exam. In addition, you will also be permitted to use a calculator during the actual exam and can use one while taking the online practice exam. Keep in mind that mobile device (cellphone, smartphone, smartwatch, tablet, etc.) calculators are not acceptable to use during the actual exam.

Please remember the first five scenarios and their corresponding questions are timed and you will not be able to go back to review them once the time allotted has expired.

What to Expect
  • For the first portion of the exam, you will be presented with scenarios for a specific amount of time. Once time has elapsed, you will not be able to review the scenarios again. You will then have a limited amount of time to answer the question associated with the scenario. This mirrors the scenarios and the first twenty questions on the actual exam. Keep in mind the time limits may be different on the actual exam.
  • After the individually timed scenarios/questions portion of the practice exam has finished, you will have forty (40) minutes in which to complete the rest of the practice exam. During this portion of the exam you may go back and forward to review questions. This is representative of the actual exam, although the time limit to complete the remaining questions will be different for the actual exam.
  • The actual exam is administered in a paper-and-pencil format utilizing Scantron answer sheets. During the actual exam, if you need to change an answer, make sure you erase your first answer completely. If you skip a question, make sure you also skip the corresponding line on the answer sheet as well.

Jason Lucero (victim)

"I left for work this morning at 7:30 a.m. I'm a foreman for a construction company and I needed to be on the job site by eight. Today is our five year anniversary, so my wife and I made plans to meet up for dinner after we got off work. I called and made reservations for 6:00 p.m. at our favorite place, Monticello's…you know, the Italian restaurant over on 4th Street? We both arrived a little before six and didn't leave until around 7:30. It was a celebration, so we went all out with appetizers, dinner, and dessert. We got back to our place around 8:00 and found this mess. I made Heather go back outside and wait by the car just in case the burglars were still inside. I checked out the rest of the house, but they were gone. While I was looking around, I noticed the back door was open. That must have been how they got in. I'll admit, sometimes we forget to lock it after we come back in from sitting on the porch at night.

"As far as I can tell, they took my wife's laptop computer, her jewelry box, and some credit cards we keep on hand for emergencies and don't carry around all the time. The thing I'm most worried about is that I had a Glock 17 in my nightstand drawer for home defense, and it's missing. They also took the box of bullets I kept in the drawer with it. Heather's been after me to get a security system installed, but I've been putting it off because of the cost. But I guess I'll be making a call to a security company tomorrow morning."

Heather Lucero (victim)

"I'm a nurse at a pediatric clinic, and our office doesn't open until nine. I left the house at about 8:40 a.m. Did Jason mention it's our five year anniversary today? We decided to go to Monticello's after work to celebrate. Our reservations were for six and we were there for about an hour and half. We got home and found the front door unlocked. We went in and saw stuff tossed around all over the living room. Jason was worried whoever broke in might still be inside, so he sent me back out to call the police while he searched the house. Once he knew it was safe, I went in. I was in tears…they could have just taken what they wanted, but instead they had to break things just to be mean. They smashed the TV screen, threw our photographs on the ground…I know our home owner's insurance will cover the damage and the stuff they stole, but it's just such a violation. I don't feel safe in my own house anymore!

"They took my jewelry box, my laptop, some credit cards, and a camera. Jason said they also took his pistol and some bullets. He's really worried about the gun being stolen. What if the thieves use it to commit another crime? First thing tomorrow morning, Jason's calling a security company and getting an alarm system installed!"

Patsy Johnston (neighbor)

"I went outside around 6:30 p.m. to water the flowers in my front yard. When I looked across the road, I noticed that neither Jason's pickup truck nor Heather's car was in their driveway, but there was a blue minivan parked by the curb I'd never seen before. The neighbor to the left of them gives piano lessons in the evenings. I thought maybe the minivan belonged to a student who just parked a little closer to the Lucero's house. There were some weeds in my flower bed, so I went in to grab my gardening gloves. When I came out, there were two men in the Lucero's driveway. One of them was holding a laptop computer. The other was wearing one of those hooded sweatshirts with the pocket in the front, and he had his hands in the pocket, like he wanted to make sure whatever was in there didn't fall out. The one holding the laptop waved at me, said he was Heather's brother and that he'd come by to borrow her computer. It seemed a little suspicious, but I didn't want to cry wolf and cause problems if there weren't any…I mean, he knew Heather's name. He told me to have a good night, then they got in the minivan and drove away.

The guy who spoke to me was White…Heather's White too, so it didn't seem impossible he was her brother. If he'd been Asian or something it would have raised an alarm. My eyesight isn't what it used to be, so I couldn't see him real clearly, but I'd guess he was probably twenty to thirty years old, with brown hair. He was kind of short for a man. The one in the sweatshirt was Hispanic, about the same age and dark brown hair. He was several inches taller than the white guy. I swear this neighborhood has gone downhill since I bought this house in the early eighties…I'd move away if I had the money!

Question 05:

According to the neighbor, what race was the man who spoke to her?
