Adapt, Re-Skill, Succeed

CHANGE… Nobody wants change forced upon them. But in 2020, we all faced the reality that sometimes we have to deal with change whether we want to or not. Change and uncertainty also allow people to reassess their priorities and determine if a change is needed, whether making changes in how you live your life or making a career change.

Change is in the air… Do you feel it?

Adapting to Today’s Job Market

The job search in 2021 is far different from years past, and the most successful job seekers are demonstrating flexibility in adapting to our new reality. There are quite a few new skills you need to stay relevant and competitive in today’s job market.

SKILLS

If you are currently in a growing industry and wish to remain, you will need to do whatever you can to stand out from the competition. That could mean ramping up your networking or even taking on new projects that keep your skills on point – while providing you with the opportunity to learn new ones. It could also mean that you need to consider how you can utilize your existing skills. The ability to pivot your skills and experience could mean the difference between finding a new job or not. This is also a good time to consider a career that trains you in a whole NEW set of skills.

REMOTE

With social distancing came the move to working and networking remotely and a massive shift to remote meetings via video. In this new age of Zoom, developing video interviewing skills is a must. Interviewing by video comes with its challenges, from ensuring there are no technical glitches to practicing to make sure you look and sound your best. You should also consider if the remote life is right for you. Some people have reported feelings of isolation leading to depression. If it’s not, you may want to consider something in a field that keeps you interacting with co-workers and the community, in person.

MANAGING STRESS

Searching for a new job can also create a lot of stress. Whether it is spending long hours looking for active job postings and networking, crafting your resume to match the job you’re applying for, or preparing for interviews, a job search can take its toll on your mental and physical health. Make sure to set time aside to take care of yourself. It can also help to reach out to a recruiter to have a conversation about what you are looking for in a career.
