Application Process: Selection Process

To be considered as a Police Cadet, Lateral Officer or Police Service Aide with the Albuquerque Police Department, applicants must successfully complete the selection process.  Listed below are the steps in the selection process and the sequence in which they are administered. 


Any candidate who does not meet the minimum requirements or fails at any point in the selection process will be immediately dropped from the process.  If you have any questions regarding the selection process, please contact the Recruiting and Selection Unit.

Step #1 Interest Card

The Interest Card:

  • Collects initial information required for the selection process.
  • Helps determine whether you are eligible for the position that you are applying for.

Upon successful submission of the interest card, all eligible applicants will be contacted by the Recruiting Unit for information regarding the next steps in the selection process.

Step #2 Three-Day Testing

DAY ONE (FRIDAY)

Dress code - Please arrive in professional/business casual attire, no tennis shoes, t-shirts or jeans permitted.

  • City Police Entrance Exam
    • Please bring a calculator with you for the City Police Entrance Exam.
    • If a candidate fails the City Entrance Exam he/she will not be allowed to retest for 6 months.

DAY TWO (SATURDAY)

Dress code - Please arrive in physical fitness attire, no spandex, muscle/sleeveless shirts permitted.

  • Physical Fitness Test
    The Physical Fitness Test is composed of the following:
    • 1.5 mile run
    • 300 meter run
    • flexibility test
    • 1 minute push-up test
    • 1 minute sit-up test

  • Nelson Deny Reading Comprehension Test
    The Nelson Deny Reading Comprehension test is composed of 118 multiple choice questions on vocabulary, reading and comprehension.
     

DAY THREE (SUNDAY)

Dress code - Please arrive in professional/business casual attire, no tennis shoes, t-shirts or jeans permitted.

  • Written Psychological Exam
     
  • Submission of Personal History Statement
    • Prior to day three, click on the link below, then print the entire Personal History package.  Instructions for completing your personal history statement are included, please read carefully.  This completed form and all required accompanying documents must be submitted on this day of your selection process or your form will not be processed.

Step #3 Background Investigation

A thorough and complete investigation into the  background of the candidate will be completed. This investigation is comprised of, but not limited to:
  • Criminal History
  • Arrest History
  • Employment History
  • Military History
  • Driving History
  • Educational History
  • Credit References
  • Social History

Step #4 Polygraph Examination

All candidates will be required to submit to a polygraph examination by a licensed polygrapher.

Step #5 Psychological Interview

The psychological interview consists of the scoring and interpretation of the written psychological test and an interview with a Psychologist. The New Mexico Department of Public Safety requires that candidates pass the psychological test by a licensed Psychologist prior to certification.

Step #6 Chief's Selection Board

The selection board is comprised of, but may not be limited to:

  • An oral interview with the Executive Command Staff.
  • A conditional offer of employment based on the understanding that the candidate will successfully complete the remaining Selection Process steps.

Step #7 Medical Examinations

Candidates will be sent to the City Health Center for a series of examinations comprised of, but not necessarily limited to:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Medical/Physical
