The Application Process

Eight key stages from application to academy — the full process typically takes 3 to 9 months. We guide you through every stage.

  1. Interest Card

    Create your online account and complete the first application materials.

  2. Testing Weekend

    Attend APD's structured testing event to complete written assessments and initial candidate evaluations.

  3. Background Investigation

    Submit required documents and authorize a comprehensive background review with an investigator.

  4. Polygraph & Psychological Evaluation

    Meet with licensed professionals for the assessments required of law enforcement candidates.

  5. Medical Examination

    Complete medical and wellness checks to confirm you can safely perform essential job functions.

  6. Chief’s Interview

    Meet with APD leadership, discuss your goals, and complete a final command-level review.

  7. Physical Fitness Test

    Demonstrate you meet APD’s physical fitness standards through timed assessments.

    These numbers are entrance standards every candidate must meet.
    ✓ Push-ups – minimum 15 repetitions in 1 minute
    ✓ 1.5-mile run – 15:14 or faster
    ✓ 300-meter run – 71 seconds or faster
    ✓ Sit-ups – minimum 27 repetitions in 1 minute

  8. Conditional Offer

    Complete final paperwork and prepare to begin paid academy training.
